Recently, we had the opportunity to become acquainted with Dillard University as we worked with our partners at Nolabeez to coordinate the launching of the organization’s website.
Nolabeez is a group of ethnic minority mass media; specifically, media written with the African-American, Asian, and Hispanic communities in mind. Nolabeez’s mission is to raise cultural awareness within the New Orleans community and unite the city.
The website was officially launched Tuesday, January 12 in the Cook Center at Dillard University. News from several of the city’s minority newspapers will be posted in one location, on the Nolabeez website (www.nolabeez.org). Nolabeez was also a sponsor for the second mayoral debate, which also took place at Dillard University that day.
Dillard University: a New Orleans Treasure
We had the opportunity to meet with President Marvalene Huges before the launch of Nolabeez’s website. During our meeting, we realized the importance of crediting Dillard’s unique role in the rebuilding of the city.
One of the top ten Historical Black Colleges and Universities in the nation, Dillard University has been a valuable asset to the city of New Orleans since its opening in 1869. It was the first school in Louisiana to start a registered nursing program and a public health program. In the aftermath of Katrina, the campus was destroyed. Nevertheless, the university did not shut down.
Instead, the campus was moved to the Hilton Hotel downtown. It has been said that this move alone was responsible for the revival of the downtown area as the campus brought an immediate need for more businesses, such as restaurants and stores, to open. Over four years later, most of Dillard’s original campus has been rebuilt with state of the art equipment. The project will be complete when the last 2 residence halls are finished in September.
President Hughes stated that the university’s next project will be to open a student recreation and health center that will be available to the Gentilly community in an effort to bring healthcare to that part of the city. Dillard is a private university, with more than 1,000 students enrolled as of the fall 2009 semester. Although it is known as a historically black university, Dillard’s student body also includes students from six other countries.
